Loving the earth
Almost everyday I take a bike ride along a wooded trail. I am surrounded by the richness the diversity and the beauty of nature. Everything around me is alive and everyday is unique. Everything is in a state of flux and everything is in a state of constant change. When I look at the vast diversity of nature that is around me I can see that it is growing out of the earth. Since the nature that I see around me is alive and it is growing out from the earth it seems clear that the earth is a living entity or a living being. It is alive.
Since the earth is a living being or entity like all living beings it has needs and when the needs that the earth has are met it becomes possible for the it to thrive. When the earth ceases to have it's needs met like other living things it suffers. When it's needs are not met it becomes likely the lack of the fulfillment of need would cause it to deteriorate and it lose it's vitality and it's life giving properties.
The earth has been providing the needs for humanity to be able to sustain itself so it makes sense that we would want to exist on an earth that is experiencing having it's needs met. But this is not what has been taking place.
The earth is filled with resources and when those resources are exploited without regard for the damage it is causing to the earth we end up with decay and disease, disharmony and disorder. We become the cause for the inability for the earth to continue to have the capacity to sustain us. We engage in the activity of exploitation out of personal greed. Obviously continuing down this path is a terrible idea. It is a path towards self destruction. It would be as if we were burning down our own home with us in it. This would be an act complete stupidity and ignorance.
It is clear that there is a need for us to change drastically. It is clear that there is a need for us to change fundamentally in the way we think and in the way we act. We need to do this not only towards the earth but towards everything because we face the same fundamental problem everywhere we turn. We are destructive. We exploit everything. We don't take the time to consider the consequences of our actions.
All living things have needs and one of the things that living things need is to to feel loved. They need to feel safe. They need to feel honored and respected and nurtured. When living things are treated in this way they tend to prosper and to bear fruit. They want to give back what they have been given and they want to share. They become healthy and balanced and they therefore behave in a healthy and balanced way.
I am quite certain that there are ways that we can channel the feeling of love through action into the being-ness of the earth. I am quite certain of this because I can see that we are intrinsically creative. We have the capacity to apply our creativity in order to find solutions to this urgent problem. We have the creativity needed that will enable us to find the means to nurture the earth back to health. Because of the richness of our diversity and our creativity it makes sense to me that there are people who already have ideas about what is needed at this time who are waiting for the opportunity to share their ideas.
Change can be frightening and it can bring the fear of loss or the fear of suffering or the fear of lack. Change can be hopeful with the promise of the creation of a better world. I sense that the changes that will be needed will not cause a sense of loss but will be uplifting because change will be the means of creating a greater sense of safety and well being for everybody and change will serve to cut us off from our hideous past of exploitation and greed which has caused both suffering for the earth and all the life that depends on the earth for it's sustenance.
We have the capacity to change. We have the need for change. We have the creativity to envision the changes that are needed. Change is where our hope is to be found. The time for change has come.
