News has just broken that Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday in open session.
Needless to say, this is rather gobsmacking. He had bowed out of an appropriations committee hearing, which would have been public, and opted for the intelligence committee. The reasoning from us in the peanut gallery was that the intelligence hearing would be closed session, and thus he wouldn't be caught in public perjury. But now he seems to have upended those assumptions.
We are reduced to Kremlinology as to why Sessions chose to make the hearing public. Is this an indication that the rumors of a rift between him and Donald Trump are true? Is he going to spill the beans? Or will he perjure himself even more? With this cast of characters, no one can make any sure guesses. But it is rather odd that with Sessions probably under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller he would testify, under oath, in an open forum, his every word watched by Mueller and his team. We can only wait until tomorrow to see what all this means.
Welcome to another fun-filled week!
